This recording only surfaced into the hands of traders around 1994, some 15 years after the recording took place. A trader came across 2 reel to reel tapes, which apart from these 4 tracks, also contain a show at the Forde Greene Hotel in Leeds 1979, another show at Stirling University 15.11.79, and an extract from a show at an unknown venue in 1979. To my knowledge all these recordings were made for the band and are therefore soundboard quality, so it would also appear that the band at one point actually owned these reel to reel tapes.

This session appeared to be for Picadilly Radio 261 (a longwave radio station based in Manchester, England - which is now an FM stereo station Picadilly Key 103 I believe), which was recorded at the Pennine Sound Studios in Manchester with Stuart James as the producer.

The session opens up with 'Here Comes The Fool', which is probably the best available recording of this never released track. It is also a great version. This is followed by an excellent version of 'Chelsea Girl', I actually prefer this version to the album version (which is saying something!).

'Garden Of Hate' is next, which is one of only 2 live versions available of this track (the other one being from their gig at the Rotters Club, Manchester 24.4.79). This is obviously produced and is not one live take as such as it features layered vocals from Jim, the main song was probably done in one take with vocal overdubs added afterwards.

A funny version of 'Naked Eye' finishes off this excellent recording. I say funny, it's hardly hysterically funny, but just puts a smile on my face every time I hear it, a strange cacophony of sounds, that Real To Real Cacophony was so full of.

My only criticism of this session is that Jim's voice throughout is not high enough in the mix, its hardly noticeable to the untrained ear really, but I think it would have sounded that bit better had it been louder.
